Analysis of two college magazine covers

1. Exeter University magazine.[cover] 

Masthead.
The masthead on this magazine is black and bold which links to the target audience of about 18-25. It is placed on the top half of the magazine and is the biggest text on the cover, this is why we know it is the masthead.

Main Image
The main image is of the earth from space. This is relevant because it is a science like university.

Information
the information given in the front cover is extremely important because it allow the audience to know what is in the magazine.
The information on this is, the date, issue number and stories that are in the magazine. however on magazines you buy there will be a barcode.

Target audience
The target audience of this magazine would be male and female students aged 18-25. however the secondary target audience would be 25 - 50, again male or female. The primary target audience would have a social status of a B or an A. The secondary target audience will be again a B or an A with maybe a C1. this is because a A and B would be able to go to university because a a-b is higher up on the income ladder. This is a university magazine and will include things that will be happening in the university a month or so before.

I will not use this for my final piece because it is a university magazine and does not follow the same conventions as a college magazine, however I may use the layout... the masthead at the top and a big main image. I might do the image of a student. {instead of the earth}

Exeter University Magazine. [contents] 

Title/Mathead 
The title in the contents is the same as the cover however it is not as big and bold. It does not say contents page but because of the layout it is clear to see that it is a contents page.

Layout 
The layout of the contents page is clear and crisp. you can see an article picture and a number. This gives the reader a clear idea of where they should go. The most important articles will be a bigger picture. So, the one on the right will be the main story.

information
The date is clear and up the top of the page. and the page numbers are on the bottom of each page along with a website.

Main image 
 The main image is clearly the soldiers on the right page. It is a medium long shot of 5 soldiers.However on the other page there are sub images most of people or animals and this relates to the target audience because you can see that the people are students at the university.

Introduction 
The paragraph at the top of the page is the message from the editor this could be a thank you or an announcement.

2. Bodmin college Magazine [cover] 

Masthead
The masthead on this magazine is the logo of the college. It also has a sub-title of Magazine. The colours are the college's colours, Red yellow and white. It also has the college's slogan on it.

Main Image
The main image is a close-up of a lion king mask. It is relevant because in that term the college produced a performance of the lion king and the whole school got involved in one way or the other. It is the only image on the cover because it is the main story of the magazine.

The layout
The layout of the cover is simple with as little text as possible witch makes the target audience focus on the main image more. however under the main image is a comment telling the audience that the story is on page 7. The masthead is at the top because it catches the audience's eyes.

Information.
The information on the cover is limited. However at the top it tells us that it is the summer issue of the magazine.

Target audience
The Target audience of this magazine will range very far. Male and females aged 11 to 16. The social class will be ranged as well because everyone from any community will attend the college. However you can tell the class could be a C1 to a A maybe.

A college magazine [contents page] 

Masthead 

The mast head on this contents page is quite plain and hard to see but at the top of the page.

The main image 
The main  image is of a group of football girls, it is a low angle shot and a medium long shot. The sub images are smaller but of things to do with the college. I.E a picture of the campus or a student.

Information
The information on the page is mainly at the bottom. The date is at the top of the page just under the volume and issue number. Which is situated under the masthead.
The page numbers are on each picture and underneath in the description on each page.

Target audience
From the contents page i would believe the target audience to be college students of age 16-18 both male and female. the social class  could be any.
However due o the number of females on the contents page i would slightly believe that it was based toward girls because it could be an all girls college.
