Sub-Genres

Within the music magazine industry there are 5 main sub-genres. These are ...

- Pop
- Rock
- Heavy Metal
- Indie
- Dance/ hip hop or rap

I will now analyse these sub genres in detail.

Pop

Within pop magazines you have the original conventions in a Magazine. On this magazine there is a lot of the colour pink this is because this magazine is aimed toward the younger female audience.

The pop genre has a range of target audiences but the main one would be 12-15 year old females. This on in paticular is aimed at the younger range of females.

The artists associated with this genre are people like Jessie J, one direction and Justin Bieber. Jessie J features on the cover of this issue of we love pop. You can also see on of the members of one direction.

Inside this magazine, You can expect to see puzzles and quizzes along with interviews from the pop genre artists. It can also offer fashion ideas to the older side of the target audience.

Rock

Rock magazines, like Kerrang, are aimed at the target audience, Males aged 20-30. This is because they are more likely to listen to this genre of music.

The main colours on the rock magazines would be black,Red and white.. On this Magazine, The masthead is big and is located at the top. This is good because it follows the conventions of a magazine. For the main image, there would be a medium close up of a rock artist. They usually are in bands so it could be a group shot.

Inside this magazine you will expect to see interviews with rock artists, Competitions and posters. The artists that you would associate with this genre are people like Green day and slipknot.

Heavy Metal

Being very similar to the rock genre, Heavy metal has little in difference. The masthead is big and at the top of the cover. The magazine has a group shot of a band. However, The target audience may be of older age. 30-45 maybe. I know this because, compared to the rock magazine, The heavy metal mag looks more sophisticated and professional.

The artists in this sub-genre would be Wolf heart and Hooped menace. In this magazine, you would expect to see interviews and competitions.

The colours are dark, black. It also has white in it for the text.

Indie

In the sub-genre of Indie, there are many different components. One, The target audience is females aged 30-40. This is because the music is aimed at an older generation and Indie music is almost always relatable.

Two, The colours are much more bright and welcoming. Reds and whites.

Three, inside the magazine you may see interviews and such things but there will be more fashion tips in this one because it is aimed at women.

The mast head on this magazine is in the top corner on this magazine. The artists in this genre would be George Ezra and Coldplay.

Dance or hip hop

Club or hip hop magazines are more relaxed about there presentation compared to the heavy metal magazine. The colours are yellow and brown.

The Target audience would be you adults18-25 of the male gender because they can relate to most of the artists. DJ's make up the majority of artists in this genre. Dvid Guetta for example.

Inside this magazine you are going to find interviews and posters.

The masthead on this magazine is at the top with the main image taking up most of the space on the cover. This is good because it follows classic magazine conventions.

It also has the right amount of information on the cover in a white colour. Following conventions, it has the barcode in the bottom right hand corner of the cover.

For my Magazine, I will choose to do the Club sub-genere because It looks like I will be able to do it with the resources available to me. I will stick to the codes and conventions of this ^^^ Magazine because i like the style of the layout. I also like the font, colours and main image. I was going to do a hip-hop magazine but after some research i though it was not a good idea because I do not know someone with the required ethnicity to be a model on the cover.
